Covid and Climate Emergencies in the Majority World: Confronting Cascading Crises in the Age of Consequences (Cambridge University Press, 2023)

Available in hardcover, paperback, and ebook here

Cascading global crises threaten human survival, particularly for people in the Majority World. The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified the miseries people are experiencing due to human-induced global heating as climate change exacerbates the impacts of weather extremes. The pandemic exposed the intense vulnerabilities of these populations to global catastrophes. Their experiences, however, differ from those in the Minority World. Injustices and inequalities permeate these lived experiences. COVID and Climate Emergencies in the Majority World presents an overview of the sufferings caused by the climate emergency on people in the Majority World, punctuated by a pandemic, expanding inequalities, and deteriorating spaces for democratic public engagement. Responses to the COVID-19 pandemic augur how future technological, engineering, political, social, and behavioural strategies could be constructed to deal with a series of parallel crises. Using a critical analysis of these responses as a springboard, this book proposes sociotechnical alternatives and just approaches to adapting to cascading crises in the Majority World.

Laurence Delina has done an excellent job of linking all the major global crises facing mankind today. None of them can be dealt with in isolation and so a joined-up approach is essential which this book provides an excellent blueprint for. “

Saleemul Huq, International Center for Climate Change and Development, Bangladesh

“A comprehensive and fascinating look at the way our crises are overlapping now – as the author realizes, this makes the moment hard, but also rich with opportunity to set the world on new footings.”

Bill McKibben, author The End of Nature

“Laurence Delina takes you on a grand tour of world crises, injustice and hope, from colonialism to overconsumption and climate nationalism to indigenous epistemology. Delina draws on knowledge from his native Philippines to highlight challenges facing the Majority World, for which rich countries are primarily responsible. With diverse topics and extensive referencing, this is a treasure trove of ideas and sources for navigating the future.”

Brian Martin, University of Wollongong, Australia

This is the book the world needs right now! Delina connects the dots in a powerful way by linking responses to intersecting global crises and offering realistic, yet optimistic, mechanisms to mobilize systemic change.”

Jennie C. Stephens, Northeastern University, author Diversifying Power: Why We Need Antiracist, Feminist Leadership on Climate and Energy

“The world is confronted by cascading crises, as Laurence Delina describes very well in this book. No country or region is spared from the impacts of such threats as the Covid pandemic and the climate emergency. But developing countries, which constitute the majority world, are specially challenged. This book presents not only an integrated analysis of these challenges but also proposes comprehensive responses to them.”
